Almost 800 years ago, Daulatabad, then called ‘Devigiri’ was a thriving city. It was founded by Bhillamraja of the Yadava dynasty in 1187 AD. Later, the fort of Daulatabad passed through the hands of several dynasties in the Deccan. Less than 150 years after the Yadava dynasty, Daulatabad also became the capital of India for a short period during the reign of Sultan Muhammad-bin-Tughluq, who gave the city its present name, but very soon the charm of this ancient city faded.
An important part of the history this imposing fort is built on an isolated pyramid-shaped natural mountain peak. The fort area is surrounded by three concentric walls (fortifications) known as kots. The fortification constitutes of three concentric lines of defensive walls with large number of bastions. The noteworthy features of the fort are the moat, the scarp and the sub-terranean passage, all hewn of solid rock.
Built around 12th century, this fort is still overlooking the city like a majestic eagle with its graceful and elegant palaces. The fort still serves as an extension of the historic Daulatabad City and its architectural value combined with the historical significance of the fort attracts loads of tourists every year. The impact of this fort was so much that the city was also renamed due to this majestic structure. Initially known by the name of Devagiri, Daulatabad fort changed its name to Daulatabad.
The city did not have one single ruler of its soil and the rule kept switching between several Deccan rulers. Sultan Muhammad-bin-Tughlaq went on to name the city as the capital of his empire. The sultan also lent the city the name Daulatabad which he believed was the city of fortunes. Over the centuries the fortress was extended refortified many times by subsequent Muslim rulers until the outer walls stretched six kilometers around the original citadel.
