Even before the world woke up to the importance of water conservation; the Sultans of Delhi integrated this ideology into their architecture and devised innovative ways and means of harvesting rain water. Baolis or step-wells were constructed throughout India during medieval times to trap rain water, but these innovative structures also doubled up as shady retreats from the city’s sweltering heat, sacred spaces and congregational points of social bustle for the people of Delhi.
