Aurangabad, often known as the gateway to the Ajanta and Ellora, holds a significant place in Indian history and culture. Often mentioned as the gateway to the caves of Ajanta and Ellora which are also one of the most famous and most visited World Heritage sites, the city of Aurangabad was founded in 1610 AD by Malik Ambar, the prime minister of Murtaza Nizam Shah of Ahmadnagar during his visit to Kharki(Khidki or Window) village. The village once called Kharki was renamed Fatehnagar by Ambar’s son Fateh Khan and later earned its current name after the Mughal prince Aurangzeb when he took its possession in 1653 AD. The city lies along the banks of river Kham and is famous for monuments, shrines, caves and museums. The city on a major trade route that connects India’s sea and land ports to the Deccan area which is known as the ‘Silk Route’.
