The city boasts of a rich past and has seen the dominance and ruin of many dynasties in its course of survival. Established by a local Muslim noble Malik Ambar at some stage in the early 16the century, the city fascinates travelers from all parts of the globe. This walk takes you to some of the most celebrated Mughal Monuments in the city of Aurangabad, from the Bibi ka Maqbara, a replica of Taj to Panchakki that displays the scientific thought process put in medieval Indian architecture.
Start your walk from the ‘poor man’s Taj Mahal’, as a replica of the Taj Mahal known as Bibi ka Maqbara. The monument was built by Aurangzeb’s son, Azam Shah, in 1660 as a loving tribute to his mother, Dilras Bano Begam. Interestingly, while the Begum nestles in the magnificent structure, the austere Mughal emperor chose to be laid in and commemorated with touching simplicity.
Our next stop is the water mill Panchakkai built in 1695; which exemplifies the engineering ingenuity of the age. The mill, which runs on water channelized from a river 6 km. away through an earthen pipeline used for grinding food grains for the community kitchen. Surrounded by series of fish-filled tanks, it also serves as a memorial to Sufi Saint Baba Shah Muzaffar, the spiritual mentor of Aurangzeb.
Himayat Bagh was known as Azam Bagh probably named after Prince Azam Shah. Later the Nizam’s Nawab brought the Bagh (garden) under their possession. It was probably given to Himayat Ali Jung and hence was named after him. There was also another garden by the name of Sher Jung Bagh near Osmanpura. Harsul and Waluj were Jagirs of Darga Quile Khan and later the Jagirs were given to Sherjung.
